This is important —

Recently, it was announced that 2015 was the hottest year on record. Here are the simple, sobering facts: the main cause of global warming is carbon pollution, and the impacts will get dramatically worse in the coming decades if we keep burning fossil fuels unchecked.

Last week in my ‘We the People’ speech series, I spoke about my Keep It in the Ground bill and the importance of acting now to stop new fossil fuel leases on our public lands that would lock in huge amounts of carbon pollution for decades into the future.

I firmly believe our public lands should be managed for the public good, not for private profit.

We need to reduce carbon emissions and jumpstart the transition to a clean energy economy, and that means the federal government should stop opening new fossil fuel leases, and make every effort to terminate existing, nonproducing leases.

The federal government needs to show global leadership, starting with how we manage our public lands and waters. In 2016, we should be focused on accelerating towards a clean energy future, not promoting the burning of dirty fossil fuels.

We can’t let up. Let’s keep working together to Keep It in the Ground.
